Discord bots are a great way of making your server more interesting by adding more features. One of the endless possibilities Discord bots offer is to play music directly on a voice channel, making the whole experience more immersive and fun for everyone.
In today’s post, we’ll learn how to add a music bot to Discord in just a few simple steps.
What Are Discord Music Bots?
Music bots are a specific type of Discord bot that allows you to play music (only in voice channels). This way, all the members within that channel listen to the same music.
Depending on the music bot you invite to the server, it can play music from YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and many others.
There are many Discord bots that allow you to play music. However, one of the most well-known is FredBoat, and that’s what we’ll be using for today’s tutorial. Some other bots with the ability to play music are BMO, Vexera, and Hydra.
But first, a little side note before starting the tutorial. Keep in mind that in order to perform the following steps, you need to be a server admin or have the ‘Manage Server‘ permission.
With that said, let’s begin!
Discord Music Bot: Step-by-Step Guide
1. Invite the bot to the server
The first step is to enter FredBoat’s website and click on ‘Invite to Server‘.
Then, select your server from the drop-down list. Click on ‘Continue’ and then on ‘Authorize‘.

2. Join a voice channel and start playing music
Once in a voice channel, simply write /play
in the chat, followed by a song’s URL or name. For URLs, you can directly link to Bandcamp, Vimeo, Soundcloud, Deezer, Dailymotion, or Twitch (FredBoat doesn’t support YouTube links). For example, you could write:
/play https://soundcloud.com/the-jam-official/going-underground
… or
/play Going Underground
– The Jam

Then, FredBoat will start playing that song. You can add several songs to the queue, and then stop the music and clear the queue by using the /stop
command, or pause the song by using /pause
.

There are several ways you can manage music within a voice channel. Here is a complete list of FredBoat’s commands for you to play around with the bot.
And that’s it! Now that you’ve learned how to add a music bot to Discord, did you know you can also record voice channels? Check out this guide on how to make a podcast on Discord to find out the bot we use.
